At the Battle of Chalons (also called the Battle of the Catalaunian Fields or the Battle of Campus Mauriacus) in 451, a coalition led by the Roman General Flavius Aetius and the Visigothic king Theodoric I clashed violently with the Hunnic alliance commanded by Attila the Hun. This battle was the last major military operation of the Western Roman Empire and the apex of the career of Flavius Aetius.

Decisive Battles: Battle of Teutoburg Forest
The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest took place in the year 9 A.D. (probably lasting from September 9 to September 11) when an alliance of Germanic tribes led by Arminius, the son of Segimer of the Cherusci, ambushed and destroyed three Roman legions led by Publius Quinctilius Varus.
The battle (which is called Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald, Varusschlacht or Hermannsschlacht in German) had a profound effect on 19th century German nationalism along with the recovery of the histories of Tacitus in the 15th century, in which the Germans identified with the Germanic tribes as a way to give the (at the time politically disunited) "German people" a common origin.

Return to Everest
Four of the most accomplished climbers in the world have just one thing on their minds right now: conquering Mount Everest-again.
The team, sponsored by Eddie Bauer's First Ascent Clothing and Gear Line, began its ascent on March 30. Over the next two months, the climbers will make their way up the world's tallest mountain in dangerous conditions, fighting hypothermia, altitude sickness, and sheer physical exhaustion to achieve something few can boast.
Mountaineer Peter Whittaker gathered the group as part of a quest to continue his family legacy; he is the nephew of legendary explorer Jim Whittaker, the first American to summit Mount Everest in 1963. Joining Whittaker is Ed Viesturs, a veteran mountaineer who has summitted all 14 of the world's highest peaks without the aid of bottled oxygen; Dave Hahn, who is going for a record 11th Everest ascent; and Melissa Arnot, who is attempting to become the first female American to summit Everest without supplemental oxygen.
Follow the team's progress up the mountain here through dispatches, photos, and videos-direct from Everest.
